The life we are creating for ourselves out in the woods is, I think, in many ways a domestic monestary: ora et labora. We spent Sunday bringing in wood for the stove. The sunlight was everywhere and the peace of a quiet autumn day infused our work with blessedness. I kept coming back to Rainer Maria Rilke "my will is absorbed in growing/ and young."

My Aunt sent me a question as to what Piekno means - Beauty. I chose the name because it is beauty I hope to nourish in our little homestead, amoung the birches and pines. We are trying to make a life of simplicity, beauty, and passion.

On Friday we had a priest friend of ours over for dinner and to bless the yurt. We lite candles under all the icons so that they could watch and approve. Father thoroughly blessed our little house - and there are no corners, nor little rooms where spirits could hide from his holy water.

  1. Emily, I cannot tell you how inspired I feel reading your blogs, this last one touched my heart so much! I love your eye and your spiritual sense for beauty... in EVERYTHING! I read the last line of this over and over and over: "and there are no corners, nor little rooms where spirits could hide from his holy water." Beautiful! So very beautiful! I love you and can't wait to visit your little treasure of a home, some day.
