Bohemian Mama: Unions and Pink Cadillacs

For Christmas this year my sister and brother-in-law gave Yarrow two cds of "Baby's First Union Songs". I remember most of them from my childhood - Joe Hill, Hobo's lullabye, and others. Yarrow likes the music, the songs are simple and repetitive, like most kid's songs, but not as banal as a lot of the children's music out there, and we like the songs too, which never happens with real kid's songs.

Yarrow's favorite songs are saved to a playlist. We dance to them when she's sad, or when she's tired, or when the snow is falling on the dome and we want to be cozy and happy together inside.  By far her number one song is Pink Cadillac by Bruce Springsteen. Her father sings it to her swinging her around in his arms while Luba bounces along beside them. Last night it took many repetitions of Pink Cadillac to lull Yarrow to sleep, but the song never fails: when she's sad it makes her happy, when she's tired it makes her sleep.

Our satellite radio has a station playing all Bruce, all the time. When we have batteries, I leave it on all day. Those are some of Yarrow's best days. Good music makes her happy.
